BIOGRAPHIC

Although Franklin Aguirre, born in Bogota, graduated from the Fine Arts Department at the National University of Colombia, he had begun to paint before his first lesson. Besides from being a painter, he´s an accomplished graphic designer, and runs the artistic group Matracas. Founder and foremost developer of the Biennial of Venice, an event that named after the neighbourhood where it takes place, involves the active participation of the resident community, ratifying his concern with theoretical analysis and cultural management.

His work, closely tuned with that of the most contemporary artists, can be identified by its sharp and strong colours, frequently involving the use of electronic features. More than just reflecting its environment, this work tries to enrich it, thanks to the insightful commentary. His paintings reveal a great imagination, and a good dose of humour that brings them close to the comic strips, perhaps too to that of the science fiction, and thus to the tradition of Pop Art. They emit messages focused on the values and behavour of society, on occasions accompanied by a subtle criticism in spite of the irreality of its characters.
